(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The US has closed its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, amid mounting interference by Western states in Syria’s internal affairs.
On Monday, Washington said it was pulling all of its remaining diplomats out of Syria, just two days after Russia and China vetoed a draft resolution at the UN Security Council (UNSC) that called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to quit.
Russian envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin rejected the anti-Syria resolution endorsed by the Arab League, saying the “international community” should not meddle in Syria's domestic conflict.
Meanwhile, on Monday, US President Barack Obama threatened Syria with further sanctions and diplomatic isolation.
“We’re going to just continue to put more and more pressure until hopefully we see a transition,” Obama claimed.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Hundreds of people, including Syrian security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters. Damascus, however, blames “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
